RESEARCH AND CONCEPT DESIGN
The rectangular, smooth shape of a smartphone is not the easiest to hold and manipulate. Areas of the screen are difficult to reach when used with one hand. The grip is not secure, and phones are frequently dropped and damaged.
We began by creating mockups of various mechanisms and testing them with hands of different sizes. Appearance options were developed for the most promising concepts.
CONCEPT REFINEMENT
After selecting a mechanism that allowed a secure grip with a relaxed hand, had 360° rotation, deployed with one hand, and stowed flat, further appearance options were developed.
DETAIL DESIGN
To attain the best performance and a low-profile design, several materials and manufacturing processes were researched, tested, and discarded before we found the right combination of metals and plastics to achieve the desired look and feel.
PROTOTYPING
Many trials and tests were required to reach the right balance between compactness and comfort, first with rigid materials, then with prototypes that flexed and moved with the user..
FINAL DESIGN
Brownlie Design, working with an idea from an entrepreneur, produced an innovative patent-protected product that met all the client’s goals—and SpiiderGriip was launched.
