MISSION
Reimagine a 15-year-old product that was the industry standard in biochemistry.
YSI’s 2700 analyzer was a workhorse in the industry, but with components no longer available, there was an opportunity to improve capabilities and address ergonomics, servicing, bench footprint, and appearance. With a new mechanical concept supplied by YSI, Brownlie Design set to work making the vision a reality..

CONCEPT DESIGN — INTERNAL LAYOUT
Beginning with the internal components, Brownlie Design explored arrangements that offered technicians better access to set up and run processes. Because laboratory bench space is at a premium, the ergonomic design was driven by the desire to reduce the analyzer’s width.
CONCEPT DESIGN — APPEARANCE
With a layout selected, appearance concepts were developed, adding details that addressed product semantics, mechanical and manufacturing needs, and brand language.
MECHANICAL MOCK-UP
A full-size model was built to test the true dimensions needed for tubing layouts and usage and service access, and to evaluate structure and manufacturability.
DETAIL DESIGN
Additional full-size models were created for ergonomic and aesthetic evaluation.

FINAL DESIGN
The final design of the YSI 2900 biochemistry analyzer featured a slim profile and a high level of ergonomic usability, resulting in a product that was well received by customers.
