SPiiDER GRiiP ATTACHABLE PHONE GRIP
This project started with an individual inventor contacting Brownlie Design to develop a secure, versatile, and comfortable grip for smartphone users. The goal was to design a premium product that prevented dropped phones, rotated 360°, had a kickstand, and would lie flat when not in use. Starting with nothing but words, Brownlie Design developed a wide range of mechanisms that were reviewed and down selected. Several rounds of prototyping and testing yielded a final design that was then fully engineered for production. The concept was so distinctive that it was granted both design and mechanical patents.
UNDER ARMOUR LACROSSE GLOVE
Tasked with defining the next generation of Under Armour Lacrosse gear, lacrosse legend Paul Gait and 22 Lax came to Brownlie Design looking for ideas that would extend Under Armour's appeal to a younger demographic.
Competitive analysis, trend studies, and brainstorming sessions fed into concept development, where three separate visual strategies were identified. In addition to redefining the brand's aesthetic vision, Brownlie Design incorporated cutting-edge molding technologies and manufacturing processes to further differentiate the new equipment from competitors. The effort culminated in the Charge line of advanced, high-performance-grade lacrosse products, including gloves, arm pads, and upper-body protective gear.
KNICKERBOCKER EMBRACE BED FRAME

The emBrace Bed Support System combines the strength of steel with the versatility of composites. Developed to improve the speed and ease of assembly, the components are light. easy to handle, and made to drop in and interlock. The recycled railroad steel core is completely jacketed in composite plastic to provide protection against bumps, squeaking metal, and snagged bedding. The soft forms are simple, understated, and integrate with any style of bedroom décor.
KNICKERBOCKER ENGAUGE DELUXE
The enGauge Deluxe Hybrid Bed Support System by Knickerbocker is an affordable Best Seller available at most furniture retailers nationwide.
The enGauge Hybrid bridges the gap between a traditional metal bed frame and the market changing emBrace support system. The enGauge uses cold rolled steel angle iron at its core but is married to soft contoured composite legs, elevating it to the status of bedroom furniture.
A key feature of the enGauge system is its ability to drop together quickly, with no tools needed for assembly. The enGauge, like all Knickerbocker premium products, provides unmatched robust support to luxury mattress sets.
KNICKERBOCKER BEDBEAM WOOD BED SUPPORT
For this project, Brownlie Design was tasked with developing a new support system for traditional wooden beds. Modern mattress sets are very heavy, and it is critical to have robust support near the center of the mattress.
From this requirement, Brownlie Design developed the new Bedbeam support system. This unique product was designed to provide customers with a premium mattress support for use with their newly purchased wood bed or treasured heirloom.
Attached firmly to the bed side rails and adjustable in width and height, the Bedbeam accommodates wood beds that vary in size. It adds the strength needed to support today’s premium mattress sets.
The Bedbeam was one of the first products that Brownlie Design developed with Knickerbocker and was the start of a 25-year relationship of innovative, profitable product design.
KNICKERBOCKER EMBRACE PLATFORM
The emBrace Platform System defines a clean and simple design standard for a platform bed. Its unique leg design allows the Platform Bed to be assembled in either a standard or elevated bed height.
In the high arrangement, with 4-inch leg extensions, underbed storage is at a maximum. Remove the leg extension for use in the standard bed height setup for a low-profile platform look.
Brownlie Design played an essential role in the development of the emBrace Platform, from early concepts to prototyping, testing and final production.
This system answers the consumer’s need for a high end “Primary Bedroom” platform solution that can support needs of today’s heaver luxury bedding.
KNICKERBOCKER EMBRACE PLATFORM 360
The emBrace Platform 360 is the latest in the line of bed support systems from the Knickerbocker Bed Co.
emBrace Platform 360 has an internal structure of doubled steel angle iron and an exterior detailed with smooth shaped composites. The 360 Platform has fast, drop together assembly but adds leg extensions that allows the system to have a high setting for underbed storage. Removing the leg extensions creates a low-profile platform look.
As is typical of their work with Knickerbocker, Brownlie Design provided truly “turn-key” design development services. During this project BD conceptually designed the product, produced all engineering documentation, evaluated first run samples, created set up instructions, and designed the shipper inner and outer carton configurations.
WATERPIK FOOTSPA
Waterpik’s foot spa line launched a new product category for the company and provided a focal point for a series of new products in the home beauty and personal health care market. Brownlie Design developed many innovative features, including ergonomic contouring, integrated handles, and foot-activated controls.
These, along with advanced appearance detailing, provided Waterpik with a single platform from which five additional products were created. Brownlie Design provided a complete development package from the initial concept generation and ergonomic studies to model construction, detailed CAD design, functional prototypes, and comprehensive communications with offshore tooling vendors.
DEBEER WOMEN’S SPORTS GOGGLES
The DeBeer Company saw the value of adding cutting-edge Industrial Design to set their women’s sport goggles above the competition. DeBeer contracted Brownlie Design to create a series of design concepts for their new sports goggles. BD generated an exciting series of styling ideas that DeBeer was able to put into production.
NALGENE N-GEN BOTTLE
The original Nalgene one-liter water bottle, known for its durability and no-nonsense appearance, has achieved iconic status among outdoor enthusiasts and college students. Nalgene saw an opportunity to expand its customer base by offering a new product to people reusing store-bought bottles of water, which leaked and chemically broke down over time. The challenge for Brownlie Design was to create a new bottle that wouldn’t take away from existing sales.
With a soft grip overmold, the lid is easy to twist on and off. The loop, sized to fit a finger or carabiner, means the user can clip the bottle to a pack or hold the bottle with one finger while leaving the thumb and other fingers free. The 750 milliliter N-Gen bottle is just enough of a departure from Nalgene’s laboratory roots to reach new markets.
POWELL LACROSSE HEADS
Powell Lacrosse partnered with Brownlie Design on the redesign of their lacrosse heads.
The design process included conceptual development of several leading-edge styles for their utility, attack and defense lacrosse heads.
The selected concepts were refined, and 3D CAD files created. Special consideration was given to product moldability, weight and strength requirements. The result was an industry leading line of lacrosse heads used by some of the most recognizable names and programs in the game.
BROWNLIE DESIGN MEDIA CENTER
Advances in computer functionality and decreases in hardware size suggest a future where the only dictates to design form and user interface will be lifestyle and usability. This concept for a hands-free computer and media player can be worn continuously, allowing users to multitask while staying connected. It is a voice-activated device that is extremely lightweight and conforms to the user’s ergonomic contours. The device projects directly onto the retina, providing high-resolution imagery and maximum privacy.
